Iraklion
Although it’s on the Greek island of Crete, Iraklion offers a wealth of Venetian architecture from their rule in the 13th century. The restored ruins of the Palace of Knossos are nearby and well worth the trip. The palace’s restored frescoes are housed in the archaeological museum in town. The city contains among its many places of worship a modern cathedral, Greek and Armenian churches, and mosques. A museum containing ancient relics is among the public buildings.
